SUMMARY:Book Talk: Kwasi Konadu
DESCRIPTION:Book Talk: Our Own Way in This Part of the World: Biography of an African Community\, Culture\, and Nation\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nKofi D?nk? was a blacksmith and farmer\, as well as an important healer\, intellectual\, spiritual leader\, settler of disputes\, and custodian of shared values for his Ghanaian community. In Our Own Way in This Part of the World Kwasi Konadu centers D?nk?’s life story and experiences in a communography of D?nk?’s community and nation from the late nineteenth century through the end of the twentieth\, which were shaped by historical forces from colonial Ghana’s cocoa boom to decolonization and political and religious parochialism. Although D?nk? touched the lives of thousands of citizens and patients\, neither he nor they appear in national or international archives covering the region. Yet his memory persists in his intellectual and healing legacy\, and the story of his community offers a non-national\, decolonized example of social organization structured around spiritual forces that serves as a powerful reminder of the importance for scholars to take their cues from the lived experiences and ideas of the people they study.

SUMMARY:Book Talk: Boukary Sawadogo
DESCRIPTION:Genre in African Screen Media: Comedy and TV Series \nFilm history shows that the medium developed from popular cinema to art house cinema. However\, the historical trajectory of African cinema shows a reverse pattern\, going from art house to popular cinema. The often assumed polygeneric nature of African cinema has remained for several decades the default approach to genre studies in the scholarship on African cinema. \nThe book talk is a discussion on comedy and other popular genres in West Africa. In contrast to art films or “auteur films” which tend to be confined to the festival circuit\, comedies\, TV Series\, and other popular genres are reaching today a far wider audience through local distribution networks\, satellite TV channels\, pirated DVDs\, and online distribution platforms. The development of video and digital technologies has also contributed to the production and distribution of popular genre cinema in Africa. The culturally rooted comic traditions of koteba theater and joking kinship have shaped West African comedies through various forms of humor. Débrouillardise (hustle) has turned the urban scene into a comic scene\, a site for individual realization. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nTags\nUnited States Events New York Events
