DESCRIPTION:The Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora Presents the Africa`~Diaspora Forum lecturer Kenda Mutongi\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nKenda Mutongi teaches a wide range of courses in African history\, world history\, and gender history. She is the author of two award-winning books: Matatu: A History of Popular Transportation in Nairobi (Chicago UP\, 2017) and Worries of the Heart: Widows\, Family\, and Community in Kenya (Chicago UP\, 2007). She has also published several articles in the major African studies journals\, and is currently writing a book tentatively titled\, Reading Under the Covers\, which focuses on the history of secondary schooling in post-colonial Kenya. \nMutongi has been an MLK Visiting Professor of History at MIT\, a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton\, and a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard and at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Amsterdam. She has also received grants from the NEH\, the Rockefeller Foundation\, the Social Science Research Council\, and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. \nMutongi serves on the editorial boards of several journals and book series in African Studies. Before moving to MIT in 2019\, Mutongi taught at Williams College for over 22 years\, where she served as chair of the Africana Studies and the Africa/Middle Eastern Studies Programs. \nMutongi was born and raised in rural western Kenya\, and received her BA from Coe College and her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. She enjoys cooking\, sewing\, and painting.

She is Artistic Advisor of the Dirección del Libro\, Bibliotecas y Promoción de la Lectura del Gobierno in Buenos Aires. She belongs to the Editorial Board of the poetry magazine Último Reino. Previously\, she created and directed Casa de la Poesía de la Ciudad (1999) and Casa Nacional de la Poesía (2000) and the International Poetry Festivals of these institutions \nPedro López Adorno (1954). Puerto Rican poet\, critic\, anthologist and novelist. He served as professor of literature from 1980 to 2012. Author of sixteen books\, his most recent works are “Arte de cenizas/Poesía escogida: 1991-1999” (2004)\, “Opera ardiente” (2009)\, “Terapia perpetua” (2018) and “Arca de la desmesura” (2019). His poems appear in important anthologies of Latin American poetry. His second novel\, “Más allá de un bolero”\, will be published by Sudaquia Editores. \nPaula Jiménez España (1969). She published several books of poetry\, among them “La mala vida”\, “Espacios naturales”\, “Canciones de amor”\, “Paisaje alrededor”\, “Terrores nocturnos” and in Mexico the personal anthology “El corazón de los otros”. Her short-story book “Pollera pantalón” has several editions and her novel “La doble” was published in 2018. “La cifra mágica” is her first essay book. She won the First Poetry Prize Tres de Febrero in 2006\, the second short-story prize LGBT Hegoak (Basque Country) in 2007 and the National Fund of the Arts First Prize in 2008.

SUMMARY:BOOK TALK: MESSIANISM AND SOCIOPOLITICAL REVOLUTION IN THE ISLAMICATE CIVILIZATION Said Amir Arjomand Distinguished Service Professor\, Sociology State University of New York\, Stony Brook
DESCRIPTION:The talk will highlight the forthcoming companion volume to Revolution: Structure and Meaning in History (University of Chicago Press\, 2019) with regard to the motivation to revolutionary action. This approach shifts the focus of analysis from the punitively general causes of revolution to the specific motivation and consequences of revolutionary social action in historical and comparative perspective. \nWithin this framework\, major instances of Islamicate Revolutionary transformation beginning with Mohammad’s constitutive revolution and the rise of Islam in seventh-century Arabia\, followed by four cases of medieval and early modern Mahdist revolutions are examined in the companion volume I am working on. \nThe persistence as well as radical transformation in revolutionary movements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries will be treated in the concluding chapters.\nThe presentation will briefly outline my conclusions regarding the Fatimid Revolution in North Africa at the beginning of the 10th century\, the Berber revolution of Mahdi Ibn Tumart in Southwestern Maghreb in the mid-twelfth century\, and the Safavid Revolution in 1500-1501 with the focus on Shi’ite Messianism in occupied Iraq and the Sunni reaction to it in the form of Daesh. \n  \n  \nCo-sponsored by NYU’s Hagop Kevorkian Center for Near Eastern Studies and Iranian Studies Initiative (ISI-NYU)

DESCRIPTION:Venue: KJCC Auditorium // 53 Washington Square South\, NYC\nReception to Follow\n\nCristina Pato is the 2019 / 2020 King Juan Carlos Chair in Spanish Culture and Civilization\, NYU King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center. \nIn this conversation\, artist and educator Cristina Pato and neuroscientist Kenneth S. Kosik will talk about music\, memory loss\, cultural memory\, learning and genetics. Dr. Kosik is the co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute and the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience Research at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. Over the last 25 years he has been researching the largest known family in the world with hereditary early-onset of Alzheimer’s disease\, in the state of Antioquia\, Colombia. His work alongside Prof. Franscico Lopera\, director of the Neuroscience Group of Antioquia\, inspired Cristina to co-create and co-teach a trans-disciplinary class on memory and migration at UCSB. This collaborative project\, designed as part of the Arnhold Innovative Teaching and Learning Initiative for the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts\, was co-created by Pato\, Kosik\, and Kim Yasuda (Spatial Art). \n*Kenneth S. Kosik\, M.A. M.D. is a neuroscientist who served as professor at the Harvard Medical School from 1996-2004 when he became the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at the University of California Santa Barbara. DESCRIPTION:Baghdad\, 1991. In the midst of the first Gulf War\, a young Iraqi girl huddles with her neighbors in an air raid shelter. There\, she meets Nadia. The two girls quickly become best friends and together they imagine a world not torn apart by civil war\, sharing their dreams\, their hopes and their desires\, and their first loves. But as they grow older and the bombs continue to fall\, the international sanctions bite and friends begin to flee the country\, the girls must face the fact that their lives will never be the same again. This poignant debut novel will spirit readers away to a world they know only from the television\, revealing just what it is like to grow up in a city that is disappearing in front of your eyes\, and showing how in the toughest times children build up the greatest resilience. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShahad Al Rawi was born in Baghdad in 1986. She is a writer and a novelist. The Baghdad Clock is her first novel. It was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction and went through three printings in the first months of publication. She is currently completing a PhD in Anthropology in Dubai. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuke Leafgren received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University in 2012\, after taking BA degrees in English and theology from Columbia University and Oxford University. He has translated several novels from Arabic into English\, including Najwa Barakat’s Oh\, Salaam! (Interlink Books). He teaches Arabic at Harvard University\, where he also serves as assistant dean of Harvard College. DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual IAAC Literary Festival will take place in New York City on October 19th and 20th and will feature the work of authors from around the world\, whose heritage lies in the Indian subcontinent as well as literary pieces that are inspired by India. Along with the addition of Poetry\, IAAC will be expanding the Literary Festival to provide a platform for Children’s Literature emanating from India and authors of Indian origin. The adult portion will have the fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry and other genres including Health and Wellness. \nThe mission is to create a space where Indo-American children can access stories that will enrich them through the powers of imagination and experience\, in an effort to ignite cultural connection. Such books will not only expand the world that they live in but will also provoke conversation by stretching the boundaries of imagination and storytelling. Our hope is that American students will also participate and that we will facilitate cultural literacy and diversity. There will be an expressions creative contest for children around the theme of Indo-American cultural identity. Stories\, Poetry\, and illustrations will be accepted and recognition/awards offered. DESCRIPTION:Drums over Harlem: Signifying Africa\, 1919-1932 \nIn the 1920s in New York the jazz cabaret was seen as offering what the writer Eric Walrond called “Africa undraped”\, and its sound was the tom-tom.  This talk will explore the period’s fascination with that instrument and with what it might signify\, focusing on two texts entitled Tom-Tom\, both of which offer to associate contemporary Harlem with “Africa”\, in one or another of its manifestations.\nPeter Hulme is Emeritus Professor at the University of Essex\, where he taught for 40 years.  His books include Colonial Encounters: Europe and the Native Caribbean\, 1492 1797 (1986)\, Cuba’s Wild East: A Literary Geography of Oriente (2011)\, and The Dinner at Gonfarone’s: Salomón de la Selva’s Pan-American Project in Nueva York\, 1915-1919 (2019).
