DESCRIPTION:  \n\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n			\n				\n			\n		\n\nDr. Tejumola Olaniyan will present his paper\, “Cartooning the Rwandan Genocide: Propaganda\, Pleasure\, Evil\, Interest.” At this forum\, This paper asks: what is the role of mass propaganda in the commission of mass-scale evil such as genocide? If the latter is impossible without the former\, and pleasure and the pleasurable are at the heart of every successful propaganda\, does it mean that pleasure and evil have a relationship? What is the name of that relationship? And\, yes\, what if political cartoons\, the typically radical form with its caustic humor\, are at the heart of the propaganda? What can resistant cartoonists do?\n \nDr. Tejumola Olaniyan is the Louise Durham Mead Professor of English\, African\, and African Diaspora cultural studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His publications include Scars of Conquest/Masks of Resistance: The Invention of Cultural Identities in African\, African American and Caribbean Drama (Oxford UP\, 1995)\, and Arrest the Music! Fela and His Rebel Art and Politics (Indiana UP\, 2004). He is also editor or co-editor of Taking African Cartoons Seriously (MSU Press\, 2018); State and Culture in Postcolonial Africa: Enchantings (Indiana UP\, 2017); Audible Empire: Music\, Global Politics\, Critique (Duke UP\, 2016); African Literature: An Anthology of Criticism and Theory (Blackwell\, 2010); and African Drama and Performance (Indiana UP\, 2004). SUMMARY:"Alufa Rufino\, A Man of Faith and Sorcery on the Periphery of Islam."
DESCRIPTION:João Reis\, Universidade Federal da Bahia\, Brazil\n\n\nBrazil\, and particularly Bahia\, was arguably the destination of most African Muslims deported from West Africa to the Americas on board slave ships during the first half of the nineteenth century. They were mainly Hausas\, Nupes\, and Yorubas who\, once in Brazil\, were involved in several slave revolts. This is a well-known story. What is less well-known is that parallel to this militant Islam\, there were other\, more accommodationist forms of Islam that also flourished among African slaves and freed people in Brazil. This lecture is about a man who represented  this form of Islam. A devout Muslim\, Abuncare (a.k.a\, Rufino José Maria) nonetheless dedicated himself to divination and other unorthodox practices that he learned in Africa and either reproduced in Brazil or adapted to Brazilian belief systems.

DESCRIPTION:The Artist-in-Residence Program\, first initiated by IAAA in 1996\, has become one of the most respected and well attended programs at New York University with audiences particularly attracted to the interdisciplinary nature of the programs. This semester we welcome Malian musician superstar Rokia Traoré. Through three programs curated by her\, she shares her work\, ideas and philosophy as an international arts and culture advocate who promotes making a positive difference through the creation of venues dedicated to the community\, and through critical thinking through the arts and culture. Programs moderated by Michael E. Veal Professor of Ethnomusicology at Yale University.
