Fernandez (NYU) \nMaría Dueñas is PhD in English Philology and was a full professor at the Universidad de Murcia. She has also taught at American universities\, and has written academic papers and participated in numerous educational\, cultural and editorial projects. \nAfter two decades in academia (English Philology\, Universidad de Murcia) María Dueñas burst on to the literary scene in 2009 with the publication of her first novel El tiempo entre costuras (The Time In Between)\, one of the most remarkable publishing sensations in recent history. The novel would eventually be translated into thirty-five languages\, and adapted into a wildly successful television series. \nHer second novel Misión Olvido (The Heart Has Its Reasons\, 2012) was another bestseller; it is set largely at a fictional university in California. \nLa Templanza (The Vineyard)\, her third novel\, which takes place in Mexico City\, Havana and Jerez de la Frontera\, is currently being made into a series by Atresmedia and Amazon. \nMaría published her latest novel in 2018. Las Hijas del Capitán\, and includes a carefully documented portrait of the colonia of real-life Spanish immigrants who were living in New York City in the early months of 1936. DESCRIPTION:NYU Center for French Language presents “La Sonothèque Nomade” at Africa House – April 4-5\, 2019\nThe Center for French Language and Cultures is happy to invite you to La Sonothèque Nomade – an artistic residency and musical event on Thursday and Friday\, April 4-5\, 2019. La Sonothèque Nomade is a lively\, nomadic\, and poetic space of listening and recording with a global outlook\, collecting songs and lullabies from somewhere or other\, accompanied by accounts and recordings. The sum of these portraits build up to create a gallery of portraits\, intended to enrich the Sonothèque. \nThis program is part of the Le Festival des cinq continents\, an annual literary event\, organized in partnership with the international organization of La Francophonie. \nA Nomadic Experience\nCreated in 2018 by performer and musician Carine Henry\, in collaboration with actor and theatre director Jérôme Bouvet\, the goal of the sound library is to record songs and lullabies in as many languages as possible. They meet people in their home or in a public space and record contributions\, following up with an interview afterwards to better understand the link that ties the singer to the song. The Sonothèque Nomade recorded songs in France and in Switzerland\, and their 2-day residency at NYU Africa House will be their first residency within the Americas. Recognized as a Center of Excellence by the French Embassy\, it also collaborates with their Cultural Services on French and Francophone-related academic and cultural projects. The NYU Center for French Language and Cultures organizes at least one annual conference\, hosts the regular series “Machines à écrire”\, and has invited a regular stream of distinguished visitors to lecture at NYU. It also sponsors events relating to French and Francophone academic and cultural life organized by other members of the NYU community. The Center is eager to expand its ties with other departments and programs at NYU. It was first founded in 1978 by Professor Tom Bishop who was its director from then until 2016.

South\, NYC\nReception to Follow\n\nPATHWAYS AND FOOTSTEPS IN DETENTION: MIGRANTS’ AND PRISONERS’ TRANSLUCENCY – MEXICO/ U.S. BORDER\nHow do female prisoners escape their cells in order to be seen at the borders of nations\, institutions and disciplines? How do obscured migrants and prisoners leave traces within systems oriented to repress and disappear them? Professor Marisa Belausteguigoitia explores these questions through the trope of translucence\, that combination of light and shadow that shows the contours of an obscured object without rendering it fully clear. Through videos and images that tell the story of how prisoners in Mexico City escaped their cells and came together with migrants at the US border\, Prof. Belausteguigoitia illuminates their conjoined presence\, voices\, and forms of resistance against the conjoined violence in Mexico and the United States today.

DESCRIPTION:oin us for lunch with Dr. Malbrán\, critic and curator of contemporary art\, as well as co-instructor for the upcoming course Art and Politics in the City: NYC and Buenos Aires. The talk will center on Dr.Malbrán’s current research\, an examination of micromuseums in Argentina\, particularly the small Ingeniero White Harbor Museum. In discussing how museums operate\, Dr. Malbrán will focus on groundbreaking curatorial programs that encourage spectators to deconstruct objects while inviting them to confront eurocentrism and embrace a politics of difference\, crucial to citizenship today. Dr. Malbrán specializes in Latin American art history\, contemporary art\, curatorial studies\, and critical theory. Also a curator\, she has organized exhibitions in Argentina\, the United States\, Canada\, Brazil\, Colombia\, and Paraguay. She has been in residence in France\, Switzerland and Spain\, and was the Hilla Rebay International Fellow at the Guggenheim Museums in New York\, Bilbao\, and Venice. \nThis will also be a great opportunity for students to meet both instructors of the new Art & Politics in the City course\, a year-long\, transnational\, multi-modal experience bringing arts\, humanities\, social science\, and digital technology to bear in exploration of street art and what it says about life in NYC and Buenos Aires. Cogut Visiting Professor in Latin American and Caribbean Studies at Brown University in Spring 2017. She holds a Ph.D. from Rosario National University\, Argentina\, and a M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies\, Bard College\, New York\, where she was a Bruce T. Halle Family Foundation Fellow. Specializing in Latin American art history\, contemporary art\, curatorial studies\, and critical theory\, Malbrán has served on the faculties of NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study in New York City and Universidad de San Andrés in Buenos Aires. \nAlso a curator\, she has organized exhibitions in Argentina\, the United States\, Canada\, Brazil\, Colombia\, and Paraguay. She has been in residence in France\, Switzerland\, and Spain\, and was the Hilla Rebay International Fellow at the Guggenheim Museums in New York\, Bilbao\, and Venice. She has held curatorial positions at the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires and the Pinacoteca do Estado in São Paulo. \nHer shows have been reviewed in Clarín and La Nación in Argentina\, O Globo in Brazil\, El Tiempo in Colombia\, and Artforum in the United States. Selected catalog writing includes essays on Guillermo Kuitca and on Pablo Siquier for Argentina’s La Nación book series on seminal national artists\, on Ernesto Neto for the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art\, and on Ragnar Kjartansson for the Icelandic Pavilion at the 53rd Venice Biennale.
