SUMMARY:Book Discussion: Looking Like a Language\, Sounding Like a Race by Jonathan Rosa
DESCRIPTION:How are Latinxs racialized through Language? Stanford professor Jonathan Rosa will be discussing his new book Looking Like a Language\, Sounding Like a Race: Raciolinguistic Ideologies and the Learning of Latinidad. Drawing on ethnographic research conducted in a predominantly Latinx Chicago public high school and its surrounding communities\, this presentation approaches Latinidad as a crucial site from which to understand the creation of racial\, linguistic\, and national borders\, as well as to reimagine worlds beyond these borders. Co-sponsored by NYU’s Anthropology Department. \nJonathan Rosa\, PhD\, is Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Linguistics at Stanford. As a sociocultural and linguistic anthropologist\, Jonathan Rosa’s research theorizes the co-naturalization of language and race as a key feature of modern governance. Specifically\, he analyzes the interplay between youth socialization\, raciolinguistic formations\, and structural inequity in urban contexts.
