SUMMARY:Enforced Disappearances in an Age of Emboldened Repression
DESCRIPTION:Governments are disappearing people at an alarming rate\, often in conjunction with policies carried out in the name of repressing terrorism\, organized crime\, or plain political dissent. Reports of undercover extraterritorial abductions of people in foreign countries are on the rise. The widely-reported case of disappeared Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi is only one example of many occurring from Mexico to the Philippines and beyond. Join us for a timely discussion on recent developments in international law and accountability with one of the independent experts charged with monitoring human rights violations and reporting to the UN Human Rights Council. \nAbout the Speaker \nBernard Duhaime serves as member and president of the UN Working Group on enforced or involuntary disappearances. He is Professor of International Law at the University of Quebec in Montreal’s Faculty of Law and Political Science and is currently a CHRGJ Visiting Scholar at NYU Law\, as a Fellow of the Pierre Trudeau Foundation (2017-2021).
