DESCRIPTION:Venue: KJCC Auditorium // 53 Washington Square South\, NYC\nReception to Follow\n\nCristina Pato is the 2019 / 2020 King Juan Carlos Chair in Spanish Culture and Civilization\, NYU King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center. \nIn this conversation\, artist and educator Cristina Pato and neuroscientist Kenneth S. Kosik will talk about music\, memory loss\, cultural memory\, learning and genetics. Dr. Kosik is the co-director of the Neuroscience Research Institute and the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience Research at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. Over the last 25 years he has been researching the largest known family in the world with hereditary early-onset of Alzheimer’s disease\, in the state of Antioquia\, Colombia. His work alongside Prof. Franscico Lopera\, director of the Neuroscience Group of Antioquia\, inspired Cristina to co-create and co-teach a trans-disciplinary class on memory and migration at UCSB. This collaborative project\, designed as part of the Arnhold Innovative Teaching and Learning Initiative for the Division of Humanities and Fine Arts\, was co-created by Pato\, Kosik\, and Kim Yasuda (Spatial Art). \n*Kenneth S. Kosik\, M.A. M.D. is a neuroscientist who served as professor at the Harvard Medical School from 1996-2004 when he became the Harriman Professor of Neuroscience and Co-Director of the Neuroscience Research Institute at the University of California Santa Barbara. He co-authored Outsmarting Alzheimer’s Disease\, co-founded the Learning and the Brain Conference for educators and conducted seminal research in Alzheimer’s disease genetics and cell biology. Poet\, playwright and cultural manager. She received the Guggenheim Fellowship 2011 (in Poetry) and the 2nd Municipal Prize of Buenos Aires 2004⁄5 (published poetry). She has seven poetry books published\, among them\, “Susy\, secretos del corazón”; “Matar un animal”; and a fragment of “Plegarias”. She is Artistic Advisor of the Dirección del Libro\, Bibliotecas y Promoción de la Lectura del Gobierno in Buenos Aires. She belongs to the Editorial Board of the poetry magazine Último Reino. Previously\, she created and directed Casa de la Poesía de la Ciudad (1999) and Casa Nacional de la Poesía (2000) and the International Poetry Festivals of these institutions \nPedro López Adorno (1954). Puerto Rican poet\, critic\, anthologist and novelist. He served as professor of literature from 1980 to 2012. Author of sixteen books\, his most recent works are “Arte de cenizas/Poesía escogida: 1991-1999” (2004)\, “Opera ardiente” (2009)\, “Terapia perpetua” (2018) and “Arca de la desmesura” (2019). His poems appear in important anthologies of Latin American poetry. His second novel\, “Más allá de un bolero”\, will be published by Sudaquia Editores. \nPaula Jiménez España (1969). She published several books of poetry\, among them “La mala vida”\, “Espacios naturales”\, “Canciones de amor”\, “Paisaje alrededor”\, “Terrores nocturnos” and in Mexico the personal anthology “El corazón de los otros”. Her short-story book “Pollera pantalón” has several editions and her novel “La doble” was published in 2018. “La cifra mágica” is her first essay book. She won the First Poetry Prize Tres de Febrero in 2006\, the second short-story prize LGBT Hegoak (Basque Country) in 2007 and the National Fund of the Arts First Prize in 2008.

South\, NYC\nReception to Follow\n\nPATHWAYS AND FOOTSTEPS IN DETENTION: MIGRANTS’ AND PRISONERS’ TRANSLUCENCY – MEXICO/ U.S. BORDER\nHow do female prisoners escape their cells in order to be seen at the borders of nations\, institutions and disciplines? How do obscured migrants and prisoners leave traces within systems oriented to repress and disappear them? Professor Marisa Belausteguigoitia explores these questions through the trope of translucence\, that combination of light and shadow that shows the contours of an obscured object without rendering it fully clear. Through videos and images that tell the story of how prisoners in Mexico City escaped their cells and came together with migrants at the US border\, Prof. Belausteguigoitia illuminates their conjoined presence\, voices\, and forms of resistance against the conjoined violence in Mexico and the United States today.

Fernandez (NYU) \nMaría Dueñas is PhD in English Philology and was a full professor at the Universidad de Murcia. She has also taught at American universities\, and has written academic papers and participated in numerous educational\, cultural and editorial projects. \nAfter two decades in academia (English Philology\, Universidad de Murcia) María Dueñas burst on to the literary scene in 2009 with the publication of her first novel El tiempo entre costuras (The Time In Between)\, one of the most remarkable publishing sensations in recent history. The novel would eventually be translated into thirty-five languages\, and adapted into a wildly successful television series. \nHer second novel Misión Olvido (The Heart Has Its Reasons\, 2012) was another bestseller; it is set largely at a fictional university in California. \nLa Templanza (The Vineyard)\, her third novel\, which takes place in Mexico City\, Havana and Jerez de la Frontera\, is currently being made into a series by Atresmedia and Amazon. \nMaría published her latest novel in 2018.
