SUMMARY:DAY 1: FIFTH ANNUAL INDO-AMERICAN ARTS COUNCIL (IAAC) LITERARY FESTIVAL
DESCRIPTION:The fifth annual IAAC Literary Festival will take place in New York City on October 19th and 20th and will feature the work of authors from around the world\, whose heritage lies in the Indian subcontinent as well as literary pieces that are inspired by India. Along with the addition of Poetry\, IAAC will be expanding the Literary Festival to provide a platform for Children’s Literature emanating from India and authors of Indian origin. The adult portion will have the fiction\, nonfiction\, poetry and other genres including Health and Wellness. \nThe mission is to create a space where Indo-American children can access stories that will enrich them through the powers of imagination and experience\, in an effort to ignite cultural connection. Such books will not only expand the world that they live in but will also provoke conversation by stretching the boundaries of imagination and storytelling. Our hope is that American students will also participate and that we will facilitate cultural literacy and diversity. There will be an expressions creative contest for children around the theme of Indo-American cultural identity. Stories\, Poetry\, and illustrations will be accepted and recognition/awards offered. DESCRIPTION:Baghdad\, 1991. In the midst of the first Gulf War\, a young Iraqi girl huddles with her neighbors in an air raid shelter. There\, she meets Nadia. The two girls quickly become best friends and together they imagine a world not torn apart by civil war\, sharing their dreams\, their hopes and their desires\, and their first loves. But as they grow older and the bombs continue to fall\, the international sanctions bite and friends begin to flee the country\, the girls must face the fact that their lives will never be the same again. This poignant debut novel will spirit readers away to a world they know only from the television\, revealing just what it is like to grow up in a city that is disappearing in front of your eyes\, and showing how in the toughest times children build up the greatest resilience. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nShahad Al Rawi was born in Baghdad in 1986. She is a writer and a novelist. The Baghdad Clock is her first novel. It was shortlisted for the International Prize for Arabic Fiction and went through three printings in the first months of publication. She is currently completing a PhD in Anthropology in Dubai. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLuke Leafgren received his PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University in 2012\, after taking BA degrees in English and theology from Columbia University and Oxford University. He has translated several novels from Arabic into English\, including Najwa Barakat’s Oh\, Salaam! (Interlink Books). He teaches Arabic at Harvard University\, where he also serves as assistant dean of Harvard College. DESCRIPTION:August 19\, 2019 marks the 100th anniversary of Afghanistan’s independence from Britain. Commemorating the roots and legacies of that watershed event\, Faiz Ahmed presents a vibrant account of the first Muslim-majority country to form a fully sovereign government\, ratify a constitution\, and promulgate an original body of national laws after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. Debunking conventional narratives of Afghanistan as a perennial war zone and remote frontier\, his recently published book Afghanistan Rising rediscovers a time when Kabul stood proudly as a center of constitutional politics and contested visions of reform in the greater Islamicate world. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCosponsors: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFaiz Ahmed is Associate Professor of History at Brown University. He specializes in legal and constitutional history in the Ottoman Empire\, Middle East\, and South-Central Asia\, as well as the social history of diasporic communities connected to these regions. His first book\, Afghanistan Rising: Islamic Law and Statecraft between the Ottoman and British Empires\, was published with Harvard University Press in November 2017. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nOur discussant\, Ayşe Baltacıoğlu-Brammer\, is currently an Assistant Professor of History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at NYU.  Ayşe is a specialist in Middle Eastern history with a focus on early modern Ottoman and Safavid Empires. Her research interests are centered around questions surrounding the Sunni-Shi‘ite conflict during the early modern period and its enmeshment with issues of political\, religious\, and fiscal legitimacy in inter-confessional and inter-imperial contact zones. \n

SUMMARY:LECTURE: ROBERT VITALIS: ENDING OILCRAFT'S SPELL OVER US
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:\nIn his forthcoming book Robert Vitalis takes apart an ideological construction that he calls “Oilcraft\,” a set of deeply-held\, pervasive beliefs about the world\, together with the actions these vivid truths license—op eds and classified memoranda\, documentaries\, classroom lectures\, naval patrols and calls at port\, journal articles\, podcasts\, press conferences\, and protests\, to name a few. Oilcraft is the close kin not of statecraft or the art of diplomacy\, but witchcraft\, a kind of magical thinking on the part of many\, diplomats included\, about a commodity bought and sold on the New York Mercantile Exchange and elsewhere. The same as copper\, coal\, rubber\, palm oil\, tin\, and so on\, all of which were once imagined as vital too. Oilcraft is about the reasoning that makes notions of oil-as-power unquestionably true\, taken for granted\, and Vitalis’ own claim suspect\, jarring\, or risable. If you are unhappy with the witchcraft analogy\, then think instead in terms of “doctrinal verities\,” to borrow a phrase from the linguist Noam Chomsky\, who insists that it is the United States need to “control” Iraqi oil resources drove the war in 2003. \nIn his keynote for the Conference on Energy and the Left\, Vitalis proposes to recover the 1920s progressive era left’s critiques of today’s commonsense beliefs about scarcity and conflict. The roots of oilcraft are found in nineteenth century social Darwinism\, neo-mercantilism\, and geographical determinism\, which\, together with scientific racism\, are all impossible to disentangle from the imperialism of that era. The beliefs have a long half-life. Oilcraft’s debunkers today\, who are likely unaware of the earlier refutations of the imagined laws of resource imperialism\, are found primarily on the right\, not the left\, and promoted by the CATO Institute rather than the Open Society Foundation\, Institute for Policy Studies and the Nation Institute. Today’s Anglo-American left appears wholly under its spell. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert Vitalis has taught political science at the University of Pennsylvania since 1999. The London Guardian named his America’s Kingdom: Mythmaking on the Saudi Oil Frontier\, a book of the year in 2006. His last book\, White World Order\, Black Power Politics (Cornell University Press\, 2015) moved away from the Middle East to explore the unwritten history of racism and imperialism in American disciplinary international relations and the recovery of its critical “Howard School” tradition.
