SUMMARY:Voices From the Battlefront 25 Years Later
DESCRIPTION:A conversation with independent curator Yasmin Ramirez\, and artists Alicia Cristina Grullon and Yasmin Hernandez who will reflect on Marta Moreno Vega’s work and the impact and legacy of her publication exposing and exploring cultural equity\, and the task of decolonizing institutions\, art history\, and more.\nYasmin Ramirez\, Ph.D.\, is an independent curator who specializes in Nuyorican and Latinx art. She is an adjunct curator for Bronx Museum of the Arts and serves on the National Steering Committee for the biennial conference\, Latino Art Now.\nAlicia Cristina Grullón is a Bronx-based artist creating socially engaged work and performance. She has exhibited and carried out residencies across New York City and in Germany.\nYasmín Hernándezis a Brooklyn-born and raised artist who researches\, reflects\, writes and paints on repatriation\, healing\, light and love as decolonial strategies.

DESCRIPTION:Author Ed Morales  and Professor Ana Maria Dopico from NYU Spanish and Portuguese department will discuss Morales’ new book Latinx: The New Force in American Politics and Culture.\nEd Morales is currently an adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race\, and is a journalist who has investigated New York City electoral politics\, police brutality\, street gangs\, grassroots activists\, and the Latino arts and music scene.\nAna Maria Dopico is the first Latina Director of the King Juan Carlos I of Spain Center and is Associate Professor of Comparative Literature and Spanish and Portuguese at New York University.

DESCRIPTION:A discussion of the latest insights on Latinx media\, including research on audiences and the state of cultural criticism\, the newest on digital platforms\, and the larger policies affecting net neutrality and media access with a focus on key strategies for engagement and activism for making change. The panelists include: \nJillian Baez is an associate professor at CSI at CUNY and specializes in Latina/o media\, audience studies\, transnational feminisms\, and media literacy. Dr. Báez is General Editor of Women’s Studies Quarterly.  She is also author of In Search of Belonging: Latinas\, Media and Citizenship. \nElizabeth Méndez Berry is a cultural critic and director of Voice\, Creativity\, and Culture\, The Nathan Cummings Foundation. \nJoseph Torres is an author\, media activist and Senior Director of Strategy and Engagement at FREE Press. \nRaquel Reichard is an award-winning\, Orlando-based journalist and editor covering Latinx social justice\, political and cultural issues. \nThe panel will be moderated by Professor Urayoan Noel\, professor of Spanish & Portuguese\, at NYU on October 29\, 2018. \nCo-sponsored by Program in Culture and Media\, and the Media\, Culture and Communications Department (MCC) \nRSVP here.
