SUMMARY:Immigrant Rights as Human Rights: A Conversation with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants
DESCRIPTION:Populist nationalism and racist xenophobia are on the rise worldwide\, and immigration policies reflect these trends. Borders are sites of frequent and extreme violations of human rights. Where are the pressure points when working to protect\, defend and promote the human rights of migrants today? What role is there for international human rights law and institutions in addressing abusive immigration practices in the United States? Join us for a conversation with the UN Special Rapporteur\, Felipe González Morales\, about contemporary topics in migration\, with an emphasis on examining U.S. immigration policy through a human rights lens. \nAbout Felipe González Morales\nFelipe González Morales is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants. He is Professor of International Law at the Diego Portales University\, in Santiago\, Chile\, where he is also the Director of a Master in International Human Rights Law. He was a Commissioner and the Rapporteur on Migrants between 2008 and 2015 at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights\, where he was President between 2010-2011. Professor González teaches International Human Rights Law since 2003 at several postgraduate programs at the University Carlos III in Madrid\, as well as in several other universities in Spain. Since 2001\, he teaches at the American University Human Rights Academy in Washington\, D.C. He is the founder and was the first Director of the Center for Human Rights at the Diego Portales University. He is also the founder and was the first Director of a Latin American Network of Human Rights Legal Clinics. Professor González holds a Doctorate and a Master in Advanced Human Rights from University Carlos III and an LL.M. in International Legal Studies from American University. \n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice and the Robert L. Bernstein Institute for Human Rights.

DESCRIPTION:This year’s Conference puts a particular spotlight on Brazil\, Russia\, India\, China\, and South Africa – the BRICS countries. At a time of increasing nationalism in the developed world\, how do these most dynamic developing ecnomies balance the need for competition policy and open economies while also accommodating industrial policy and the pressure of globalized markets? The Conference will kick-off with a speech from Nobel-prize winning economist Joseph Stiglitz. SUMMARY:Save the Date – Celebration of Manthia Diawara
DESCRIPTION:Join us the evening of September 19th as we honor and say thank you to Manthia Diawara for his years of dedicated service and vision for the Institute of African American Affairs. The evening will begin with a screening of his latest film An Opera Of the World\, the centerpiece of which is a staging of Wasis Diop’s Bintu Were\, A Sahel Opera filmed on location in Bamako\, Mali in 2007. The opera is a pioneering work telling the story of migration from West Africa to Europe by combining traditional Malian music with the structure of the Western operatic art form. Diawara’s film serves as a mirror to build an aesthetic and reflexive story\, through song and dance\, about the current and yet timeless drama of migration between North and South\, and the ongoing refugee crises.\nDetails to follow in the Fall
