Advance research on both Africa and its diaspora

Our Mission

The mission of the Center for the Study of Africa and the African Diaspora (CSAAD) at NYU is to advance cutting-edge, multi-disciplinary research on both Africa and its diaspora in ways that bring that scholarship into sustained conversation.

From its location in New York City, amid one of the largest and most diverse African-descended populations anywhere, the Center partners with NYU sites in other locations to establish new global connections with parallel initiatives and institutions around the world. These collaborations form a new nexus of scholarly interaction, while the Center serves as a hub through which NYU’s programs, departments, and institutes coordinate activities related to Africa and its Diaspora. Through multiple fora at all levels of the academy – undergraduate, graduate, and the professorate – CSAAD encourages dialogue between and among scholars, cultural workers, activists, policy makers, and various other constituencies, with a view toward social justice, political empowerment, and the amelioration of the human condition, worldwide.
